In 1985, devoted Father Bill Furlong uncovers disturbing secrets held by a local monastery and discovers some shocking truths of his own. While Cillian Murphy was again discussing collaboration with Tim Mielants, Murphy’s wife suggested that the novel "Small Things Like These" ; turn into a movie. After receiving the rights from producing partner Alan Moloney, Murphy pitched the idea to Matt Damon, who set up a studio on the film’s set with Ben Affleck.

Featured on 60 Minutes: Red Sea Crisis/Fake Voters/The Invention of Cillian Murphy (2024). Growing up in Ireland in the 80s, I was raised far from this, but there was a place near me where there was a nunnery, not that I in my 50s, watching this movie makes me think back to those times when you would see a girl from one of those places and whisper. Little did I know, and this movie took me back to that.
The characters, including the children, were incredible
Powerfully. Cillian’s performance was so underrated, and everyone else. The stories of the Magdalene Laundries are a dark and horrific part of Irish history, films like this give us a glimpse into the pain and suffering.
